Fall in Iceland

Feeling very lucky that I have such an amazing fiance! Not only did Doug take me on an amazing trip to Iceland, but also upgraded us to first class. The only downside, is that I have no idea how I’m ever going to fly coach again! (#spoiled)

We took a redeye, which I was dreading so it was such a treat when we were greeted with some champagne! I was really hoping that it would help me fall asleep since I was already a bit jet lagged from our last trip, but no luck. I hardly slept at all.

The first thing I wanted to do was go to the Blue Lagoon. I had heard that it gets really crowded, but that if you’re there first thing in the morning it’s not too bad. We were there almost a half hour before they opened at 8AM, which was great because we had the whole place basically to ourselves for the first 20 minutes or so. I would have loved to stay longer but we had places to go!

The path leaving the lagoon was so pretty it looked like something out of Game of Thrones.

We stayed at Iceland Air Hotel Vik and had the most amazing meal. I had heard that food in Iceland wasn’t spectacular so I was really pleasantly surprised.

Last year we visited the Giants Causeway, we’re starting to think that we’ll have to make Basalt chasing a thing on every vacation!

I cannot over emphasize how cold it was! I was in a parka and a coat and a sweater and a beanie… and I was still freezing!

There are horses everywhere! I kept wanting to stop but there was never a good place to pull over until we spotted these guys. I could’ve stayed there with them all day, but it was about 35 degrees out and I’m not built for that kind of weather haha

Doug was so cold that he wouldn’t get out of the car, so I hopped out to enjoy the view and photo op.

The next pit stop was this little turn out where you could see houses built in to the rock. Legend has it that these are houses for elves!

I wonder what they charge for rent?

On the road back to Reykjavik there was so much thermal activity! If you look out of the window you can see steam coming out from the ground!

When we finally got back to Reykjavik we only had a few minutes of sunlight left so we went to the one landmark we knew about. The church is modeled to look like the basalt columns that we visited earlier in the day!

On the bright side, since I wasn’t asleep I saw the northern lights from the plane! I immediately woke Doug up and we spent the next hour or so just staring at them. I was surprised that the lights look green in the picture, in real life they looked white!

The water was so incredibly blue, and Doug loved it even though he was calling it “fart pond” before we went hahaha! The sulphur in the water does make it smell, but you very quickly get used to it and don’t notice it at all. Also when we left, despite being jet lagged we looked amazing! This place is like the fountain of youth. I want to come here every year and get my fix.

We started our drive to Vik, which is a beautiful road trip. I loved it and Doug slept almost the whole way.

I made Doug drive on the way back, since I drove the way there. I kept making him take pit stops so I could take pictures. This little church was one of our stops, isn’t it gorgeous?

The good thing about all of the rain and sleet is that the waterfalls were flowing at full force!

I’m much happier than I look here. Smizing doesn’t exactly work when you’re covered in winter gear.
